The US President and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone of their war of words, increasing strains between the two countries following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He has cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.
Rising Rhetoric coupled with Claims
Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump threatened comparable use of force against Bogotá, claiming Colombia is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and selling it to the US."
Although Colombia stands as the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way involved in the trade.
A Frayed Relationship
This nation was historically a close partner of the United States in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have worsened significantly after Trump was elected.
The nation's drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.
Petro's Strong Rebuttal
When asked whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."
President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, rejected Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.
"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.
"If US bombs target civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture the president, whom a significant portion of Colombians admires and supports, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the people," he admonished.
From Guerrilla to Statesman
He passed some years as a young man participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before winning president.
"I swore to abstain from using a gun ... but for Colombia I will take up the fight," he said.
Reinforced Protection and Cross-Political Rejection
The Colombian defence minister reported that the president’s security detail was strengthened.
A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures from across the ideological divide have condemned the possibility of a US attack against their nation.
Bilateral and Economic Pressure
The US withdrew his travel authorization following he called on US troops to ignore any illegal orders. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and a number of close collaborators.
Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes against vessels off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
