Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
