Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 9 PM GMT Friday evening, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, charged over the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity when she finished her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"Many co-workers use transit services, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act occurred, you know, it's horrible."
