Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
