The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
