Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
