Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
